Sugar Bowl Tickets - A Legendary Game Returns To Its Proper Home

By: Jay Nault

Sugar Bowl tickets have always been a chance to let your hair down and enjoy the atmosphere in perhaps the world’s greatest party town - New Orleans. The French Quarter lights up in every way every New Year’s Eve, and the Sugar Bowl is just an excuse to prolong the party for a few days. It was always a great match - festive college football fans and a city that knows how to host a big party.

However, things have taken on an entirely different perspective in the past year, as Hurricane Katrina reminded the entire world what was and is important, and college football is way down the universal list. Katrina all but ruined the city, and the damage it caused will take decades to erase. This disaster was the single biggest natural catastrophe in the history of the United States, and the world’s collective heart poured out towards the good people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region.

As a result, 2006 Sugar Bowl tickets were available in an entirely new city, as the game was played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. While Atlanta was more than a gracious host, and the city was and is more than capable of putting on an event as grand as the Sugar Bowl, the event just did not feel the same. There was no French Quarter, no New Orleans jazz and no dancing in the streets.

However, the 2007 Sugar Bowl is returning to its traditional home. The Superdome, where the game has been held since 1975, will once again open its doors to big-time college football, and no one will be happier to see this happen than those who host the game.

The game itself dates back to 1935, and from 1935 until 1974, the game was played at Tulane Stadium, which was also informally known as the “Sugar Bowl.” As it stands now, the Sugar Bowl does not have an iron-clad conference affiliation, but generally does select the SEC champion as part of the BCS. Every four years, the Sugar Bowl also hosts the BCS championship game, which only raises the stakes to an already high-stakes game.

If you’ve never been to New Orleans for a Sugar Bowl, you’re missing out on more celebration options than you can imagine. The teams are highly successful, the atmosphere is electric and the game is always hotly-contested. It’s been that way for more than 70 years, and will remain that way for generations to come. This year, however, 2007 Sugar Bowl tickets will be just that much more special.
