The Eyes are the Soul of the Body Iridology is not a New Science

By: Magie Mathews

Iridology is by no means a new science. It is often said that “The eyes are the key to a person’s soul”. Mathew 6, 22 states that “The light of the body is in the eye” when the eye is sound the body is sound”. Indeed history record s that the eyes have been used to diagnose a person’s health for literally thousands of years. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, referred to the eyes in his diagnoses, and evidence suggests that numerous groups of people including the Jesuits, the Brahmins, and the monks of Tibet knew that centuries ago that the colors of the eye were influenced by diseased conditions of the body. It has also been reported that stone slabs found in Asia Minor depicted the iris and its relationship to other parts of the body.

The principles of iridology have also been known and practiced for some time in Europe, Chromatic Medica published in 1670 and written by Phillippus Meyens of Dresden mentions iris markings, while a Scottish physician named Keogh Murphy wrote his authoritative guidebook “The Practitioner’s Medical Treatments” in the year of 1735, again quite clearly and more emphatically noting the relationship of the eyes to the state of health of the patient. However until the time of the end of the First World War these ideas were not held in high stead.

The founder of what is now called “Modern Scientific Based Iridology” was a genius – a Hungarian Physician named Ignatz von Peczely. As a young boy Dr. Peczely treated a young owl who fortunately or unfortunately he had tried to capture. In the bird’s attempt to defend itself it clasped its talons into the young boys arm. There was no other way to extricate himself but to horribly break the owl’s leg. As the two struggled Peczely and the owl locked glances. The young lad noticed to his surprise a black streak appearing suddenly in one eye of the owl. The owl was nursed back to health by the future Dr. Peczely – indeed allowing him to realize and notice his gift of healing. The owl became quite tame to the future doctor. It returned on a regular basis for visits and feeding. In the fall of the year the owl flew away to return the next spring. That following spring the same owl returned again to visit. One day the future physician Dr. Peczely noticed to his amazement that the black streak in the bird’s eye was still plainly visible. However it was now encompassed and surrounded by a border of white lines.

During his working career the doctor was able to construct a medical map of the eye, locating the areas that recorded the various organs of the body. In 1880 he published the results of his work and medical investigations in scientific journal,
However when this visionary and luminary visited London to present his finding at a medical congress. However there still was resistance to this area of medicine which some called “absurd”. Although a lecture was given and enthusiastically received by a private group of doctors the president of the medical congress would not allow the proceeding to be published.

The struggle for iridology should have ended there. Even though Dr. Peczely suffered severe disappointment at the non acceptance and ridicule of his work and as well experienced severe personal disappointment at the later tragic death of his wife this very work of efforts of Dr. Peczely was groundbreaking non deniable scientific backgrounds to the power and treatment effects of Iridology, Dr. Peczely is known as the father of modern Scientific Iridology. Indeed “The light of the body is in the eyes “.
